A Corner of Charleston's History: The Powder Magazine
The Old Powder Magazine, 79 Cumberland Street
In the late 1600’s, a wall began to be erected around Charles Towne to protect its citizens. They frequently came under attack from the Spanish, French, Native Americans, and let us not forget the infamous pirates. Significant amounts of ammunitions were necessary to defend Charles Towne. The Old Powder Magazine was built in 1712 to store the city’s gunpowder.
