A Corner of Charleston's History: The Powder Magazine
The center support column demonstrates the thickness of the walls
The Powder Magazine was constructed with 32” brick walls. The groin arched roof was designed so that if an explosion were to occur inside the building, it would implode. Sand was kept on top of the roof for the purpose of suffocating any fire that might arise from an explosion.
