A Corner of Charleston's History: Pirate Houses

141 Church Street           143 and 145 Church Street

These properties are often referred to as the “Pirate Houses,” but no evidence has ever been found to support this claim. The houses were built in and around 1740, by Alexander Peronneau. At the time they were called tenement houses, similar to today’s apartment houses, and were rented by the working poor.
