A Corner of Charleston's History: The Powder Magazine
British cannon used during the Revolutionary War
Armaments were kept in The Powder Magazine off and on up through the Revolutionary War. In 1780, a 13” shell came within 10 yards of hitting the building. The decision was made to remove the 10,000 pounds of powder to a safer location. The Powder Magazine remained bricked-up until 1820, when it was briefly re-opened to once again store ammunitions.
