A Corner of Charleston's History: Dock Street Theatre
The Dock Street Theatre, 135 Church Street - notice the earthquake bolts
The original Dock Street Theatre opened in 1736 with a performance of The Recruiting Officer.  At the time it was described as being "little more than a barn", but the Dock Street  was the first American Building constructed for the sole purpose of being a playhouse! By the 1730' s Charles Towne had undertaken serious measures to cultivate the arts. The Theatre advertised regular performances throughout the next year.
